On October 2, the Collegiate Board of Directors of ANS (Brazil's National Supplementary Health Agency) approved the inclusion of a new procedure for the treatment of complex gallstones in the ANS List of Health Procedures and Events (Rol).

Which procedure was added

On October 2, the ANS Board of Directors approved adding cholangioscopy with laser or electrohydraulic lithotripsy to the list of mandatory health plan coverage (Rol).

The technique is used to treat complex gallstones: it makes it possible to break up and remove stones that are large or hard to reach with the traditional method.

Who is eligible

Coverage applies to patients whose treatment with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), the usual procedure in these cases, has failed.

Effective date

Coverage becomes mandatory on November 3, 2026. From then on, health plans must cover cholangioscopy with lithotripsy whenever ERCP has failed.

How it was assessed

The technology was submitted directly to ANS and assessed at the 53rd and 55th technical meetings of Cosaúde, the committee that updates the List of Procedures, held in July and September.

Before the decision, the topic also went through Public Consultation No. 175 and Public Hearing No. 68, both held in August, which open the process to public participation.

What the List of Procedures is

The List of Health Procedures and Events (Rol) sets out the mandatory coverage for health plan members. It includes consultations, therapies, exams, procedures and surgeries to treat all diseases in the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
